Dubai Metro Guide
At the beginning of the XXI century, the rapid growth of the population and tourists in the UAE led to the fact that the transport system worked to the limit. To eliminate this problem and unload roads, the country’s authorities decided to build a subway in Dubai. Today it is one of the most modern and best “subways” in the world. If you do not know how to navigate the Dubai Metro, we are sure our article will help you figure this out.
On the way to the future: features of the Dubai metro
The features of the Arab Metro, opened in 2009, include full automation of work. That is, trains run without drivers. The subway consists of two branches – red and green. Most of the route passes above the ground, at an altitude of 10-15 meters. This allows you to see a beautiful panorama of the city during the trip. The average speed is 40-50 km / h.
This popular form of public transport allows you to not only save money, but also quickly, comfortably reach popular attractions, shopping centers and the international airport. The opening hours of the Dubai Metro are from 05:00 a.m. to midnight, except Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, it opens half an hour later, but is open until one in the morning. On Friday, you can use the subway from 13:00.
The trains of five wagons are divided into three classes – gold, for women with children, indicated by a pink plate, and silver. The first is at the head of the train. Two cars are reserved for women and children, the rest are in the silver class.
The gold section with spectacular finishes and large windows is equipped with 18 leather seats. Other classes differ from gold in a simpler design. Women can use all subway cars, but men are not allowed to enter the female unit. For violation of this rule, a fine of 100 AED or 22 USD is imposed. However, usually, controllers are loyal to tourists and ask them to transfer to the appropriate carriage at the next station.
To travel on the subway you need to buy a red (NOL Red) or silver (NOL Silver) card. If you want to ride in cars of the “golden” class, you will need a NOL Gold pass.
NOL Red is a non-rechargeable card designed for 10 trips over 90 days. After this period, it is deactivated. The price of the ticket is 2 AED or 0.5 USD. The minimum fare in the Dubai Metro is from 4 AED or 1 USD within the same zone. The maximum price is 8.5 AED (2.3 USD) in case of repeated travel during the day.
If you plan to use the subway often, it’s advantageous to buy a replenished NOL Silver pass, which is valid for 5 years. Its price is 25 AED or 7 USD, but 19 AED is already on the account and can be used to pay for the fare. One-time trips with a silver card will cost less than a red one – from 3 AED or 0.8 USD. You can also replenish the ticket for 50 AED (14 USD) and use the same subway zone for unlimited time during the week.
Many tourists do not know how to buy a ticket on the Dubai Metro. You can buy a travel card and put money on it in special machines located at railway stations and stations, as well as at the airport.
